Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Maintain self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Interpret manufacturer guidelines to determine repair and maintenance requirements for self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Complete periodic safety and serviceability checks on apparatus according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Complete leak detection and withdrawal warning alarm tests according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Complete minor repairs to faulty equipment and replace defective parts according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Complete repair and maintenance records according to organisational procedures.
       
Element: Use self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Identify emergencies requiring use of self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Assemble component parts of apparatus and promptly complete operational checks.
  • Fit and adjust apparatus to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Operate apparatus during emergency incidents according to manufacturer instructions and organisational work health and safety (WHS) procedures.
  • Monitor air supply by checking gauges regularly throughout emergency activities.
       
Element: Respond to chlorine gas emergency.
  • Communicate initial assessment of emergency to appropriate personnel and determine required response.
  • Isolate chlorine gas equipment and notify emergency personnel according to organisational emergency response procedures.
       
Element: Maintain and store self-contained breathing apparatus after use.
  • Dismantle apparatus and clean all components according to manufacturer instructions to maintain serviceable condition and prolonged lifespan.
  • Store apparatus to allow efficient access for next use.
  • Tag, isolate and report faulty apparatus according to organisational procedures.
       
Element: Debrief and complete reports.
  • Participate in incident management debrief and identify future response improvements.
  • Complete required incident reports according to organisational procedures.

Assessment Tasks
